EARN IT YOURSELF

Does anyone have any tips on handling press at a major music festival? I think I have a handle on it but this will be the first time I am setting up press conferences with press and artists so I just wondered if anyone had any tips =) thanks! (I went to the EIY meets up at Warped Tour a few years ago but since this will be with press and not young adults eager to get into the music industry I figured it won't be as calm ha)

I do know of this, but not for the entire tour. I’ve known people to do multiple weeks at a time in a car. This is a really tough way to do things. Some of the drives are long, and you won’t get much sleep. Also, as a volunteer, you don’t have full access to things, so getting in and out of the venue could be tough. If you can get to 2-4 dates, that’s great, but you don’t need to make a huge impression by being there for multiple weeks.

On Sunday November 25th Feed Our Children NOW will be a part of a very special event in the NEWPORT BEACH AREA. We need Volunteers to help run a food drive between the hours of 1pm and 5pm. You will need your own transportation to and from the event. Again you must live in California and be able to get to Newport Beach area. My Week Behind the Scenes on Vans Warped Tour!

Whaddup, EIY? I’m Emmy, I’m a student at Drexel University in Philadelphia, and this past week I had the privilege of doing presswork for Earnityourself.com on Vans Warped Tour!

Here’s the breakdown of how it went.

I’m currently at home in DC for the summer, so I left for my first day at 4am to make it to Camden by 8:30. After being granted permission to park in the bus lot (way cool!), I got my vendor bracelet from Natalie Dickinson, founder of Wearethekidsblog.com, and helped set up the FeedOurChildrenNow tent outside the venue. We spent a few hours slapping skip-the line bracelets on kids in exchange for their donations, then Natalie took me to the press area.

There I got another bracelet that allowed me access to the interview areas, and a photography pass for my camera (aka my iPhone, yikes!) We signed in with an awesome woman named Bethany, who gave me a list of time slots for the bands available for interview that day (who all happened to be milling about, right there! Just act casual, right??) After starring at some really big names, I settled on Mayday Parade and made my way back to the FeedOurChildrenNow merch tent inside the venue. I hid from the rain selling t-shirts until it was time for my interview with Derek, Mayday Parade’s vocalist.

I returned to the press area, where Bethany introduced the two of us and lead us to a semi-quiet area to talk on camera. Another EIY volunteer, Megan Duong, filmed as we talked about his time on the tour thus far. It was my first experience conducting an interview, and luckily Derek went easy on me!

I spent the rest of my afternoon in the merch tent until breakdown, and we finished just in time to make it backstage for YellowCard and Taking Back Sunday (unbelievable!).

My next 5 days went about the same, with lots of hours driving in between! Lucky for me, I have some awesome friends who let me couch-surf from Connecticut down to Virginia Beach. Thanks to the passes from EIY and my newfound friendship with press super-star Bethany, I ended up scoring over 15 interviews on my journey. Some highlights were getting to help with practical jokes on Rise to Remain’s vocalist, Austin Dickinson, and being asked to shoot Taking Back Sunday’s acoustic set.

Fingers crossed that I’ll be able to get myself on a bus next year, and save my nighttime hours for rest instead of jamming out cross country in my suicidal Chevy!

Tune in to tomorrow night’s EIY Podcast for some awesome conversations with some special guests, starting with Kevin Scoles from Ernie Ball — he’s the guy that listens to aaaaaaalllll the bands who submit for the Ernie Ball Battle of the Bands! He’s been a big supporter and good friend of EIY’s for many years. He even did an interview for the EIY Handbook! Learn about the inner-workings of one of the coolest guitar companies and one of the longest-running battle of the bands in the world!

We’ll also be chatting with my long-time friend and veteran of the Midwest punk scene, Robbie from The Timmys. They’re putting out a new album and we’ll have some exclusive previews of the new songs! We’ll be chatting about the punk scene and how the underground music world has changed in the 15 years they’ve been a DIY band.

As usual, we’ll also be playing music from unsigned bands on the show, and we’re always looking for more songs! I have 2 questions about volunteering for Warped. Do we get in for free? Because I would like to help but have already purchased my ticket, that way if the entrance is free I can give mine to a friend. And lastly, do we have to work the booth all day or will we be able to watch bands play?

If you volunteer, you do not need a ticket. This opportunity is for people who want to work in the music industry, promote upcoming local shows and local bands, see what it’s like being on the tour for a day — while also documenting the experience. While there will be time to see a couple bands, the primary focus of our volunteers should be to work for the day and make the most of having behind-the-scenes access.

WANT TO WORK ON THE WARPED TOUR FOR A DAY?

This summer’s Vans Warped Tour is upon us: the first show is just over a week away, and we have an awesome opportunity for you to not only work at your local Warped Tour date, but also represent and promote your local music scene at the Warped Tour on behalf of your Local EIY Chapter! EIY has teamed up with Feed Our Children Now! and will be sending volunteers to work in their booth and experience a day in the life behind the scenes on the Warped Tour! You’ll get there early in the morning, help load in, set up, and work the booth, and also promote your local scene in the tent all day by handing out promotional materials that your EIY Chapter will be responsible for collecting from local bands, venues, promoters, companies, and organizations! A few hand-picked Chapter members will also get the chance to have one-on-one interviews with your favorite bands, and meet Kevin Lyman himself to tell him about your efforts in your local scene! You can even make your own flyers, zines, buttons or stickers to hand out in promotion of your local music and art scene.

STEP ONE: REGISTER to join the EIY community, and LOG IN to the forums!

STEP TWO: Read about PROJECT WARPED TOUR in the forums, so you know what it’s all about!

STEP THREE: Join (or set up) your LOCAL EIY CHAPTER! You’ll receive an email from us with next steps to take as a new member.

STEP FOUR: Tune in to the weekly EIY PODCAST every Monday night, to connect with other EIY Chapters from around the world and discuss Warped Tour, meet-ups, and everything else we are working on!
